It is amazing what the cash price can do for you. You can also always negotiate a bit too. :)

We live in a state that is part of the lawsuit against Obamacare,(we opted out according to the current admin therefore if you need help with paying emergency medical, forget it). So recently my younger sister who is in her real early 50's, was rushed to the hospital because she couldn't breathe it turned out she has AFIB. So when they got the bill after 4 or 5 days, 2 of which were in ICU, it was amazing the difference , between self pay, and insurance (our friend had been hospitalized a few years ago for the same problem), she paid more than my sister has to without insurance (after insurance paid, her bill was still more), So you are right if you self pay sometimes it is cheaper all the way around. There are medical clinics privately operated that base it totally on your income, insurance or no insurance. Why because the doctors who are great people, and great doctors, believe everyone deserves quality care at a price they can pay based on their income. Unfortunately cardiologist are not connected to these medical centers. But still looking for one for her.

Yes, it's an ugly world of deductibles.
I do think, in the long run, healthcare costs (in general) will go down once people are paying for their own tests. There are SO many uncessary and expensive procedures ordered.... and people don't care because their insurance picks up the bill!

Good to know- I'll be looking into it, though our deductible this year is *only* 3K/year each, with 5K/year total for the family (and then after that we're responsible for copays, etc. up to another 1K), we've never had to deal with deductibles before.
