I let them pick out a favorite meal (usually store-bought junk like fish sticks or frozen pizza) and a cake mix. Then they say what shape the cake should be in, horse, car, etc. I scour pinterest and oblige. 🙂 They get a gift, and we hang balloons. No parties or friends – but they sure love their birthdays! 🙂
oh, and I have a special china set we reserve just for birthdays. It was also my wedding china.

Loved the review! I read like the first 100 pages one night and couldn’t sleep all night long. I literally could not finish the book.It was so hard and real and intense. SHE LIVED IN UTAH!!! I LIVE IN UTAH!!! But reading your review I want to finish it… I never got to the tender mercies and I’m totally just stuck on the horror of it all. I need some resolution!

This book has been on my to-read list forever. I was in the hospital after just having had Chloe when she was found–Chloe was born the night before. I watched the news coverage all day long.

Christi, I think each family needs to do what works for them, and I know a lot of moms who love giant parties. As long as they truly love it — I think that’s great!

We have the birthday kid make a choice: one friend spend the night or a bunch come over for two hours for cake and pizza. Nothing elaborate. Did I mention we have 4 kiddos? (Every time I turn around, there is another birthday 🙂

I just finished this book a couple months ago…I agree… I wanted so much more about her return to her real life. How soon did she go back to school? Was she weird about food/eating after starving for 9 months? How did she handle the media presence? Living in downtown SLC at this time, the story captured me. She’s simply an amazing person. Grateful that God’s mercy extended to her so that we can be inspired by her story.
