I would just ask her what SPECIFICALLY she wants to know, and just answer that. A book with very basic info can be helpful too at that age!

Thank you for this. As a father (and mother) of a 5-year old daughter, we're constantly trying to figure out the "right time" to have certain conversations, and "how far" to go. I was very lucky when I turned 12, my father had an extremely rational and logical way of talking to me about sex - he basically just spend an hour going over how important it is to be smart and safe in my decisions, and to be aware of all the consequences. He (and my mother) also made sure my brothers and I knew we could always come to them and there would never be any judgement. However, my wife and I have a daughter (which obviously leaves me flabbergasted in some new way every single day), and my wife's mother died before she was old enough to have any talks, so she doesn't have very good experiences in her past to draw from. Your post has helped us come up with quite a few answers to our questions.

So, my kids know generalities about sex, less so the full process before 8. I find MOST parents don't even think about it at 8, so it's a happy medium for us.

This if filled with great advice! Although I will say I was quite surprised that you said you wanted to be the first to approach the subject of sex with your kids, yet waited until age 8 for the real “talk.” My husband was surprised as well. We were both pretty sheltered kids but we both remember hearing comments and stories about sex from other kids long before age 8. I’m glad my parents started the discussion for me before that.

I am sorry about that, that's not OK to not feel good in a nice outfit. That is good advice, that no means no at ANY time....

A couple of additions I think might be important: (at college) if at any point, while engaging in sex, the other person changes their mind and wants to stop, just stop.

For a daughter (when appropriate): letting them know what you wear is not a reason for anyone to do anything to you without your permission, including vulgar comments. Growing up I often felt like how I dressed (wearing regular shorts, tank tops, etc. ; nothing super provocative) was part of the reason I received so much unwanted attention and sexual abuse from boys. I started to wear baggy sweatshirts and boys cargo pants to hide my body. I’m 35 now and still feel very vulnerable in sexy dresses (appropriately sexy) or even when my spouse comments on how good I look. It’s not okay to feel like this.

Anyway, just the two thoughts I had while reading your article (awesome advice, btw).
