Hey Hilary! Really, really great article – I think my favourite thing about camping is playing cards games too – there’s so few other times when you get to! I remember playing them with my Grandad as I was growing up – so I always associate them with family vacations!

My kids are grown now and starting families of their own. When they were little we camped in Lake Tahoe every summer for a week and we are still doing the same with the next generation. They have wonderful memories, including telling scary stories around the fire and roasting marshmellows, making and eating fresh salsa, playing cards and games, tubing down the Truckee River, and jumping off the rocks at the beach. Fun family time!

Our family loves camping too. Each summer we try to do three trips. The kids all go with just their grandparents for four days and I think that’s fantastic for them to bond with the older generation and be provided bits of wisdom and life experience that I can’t provide. We do one trip with just us and the kids and then over Labor Day weekend we go camping all together for a week at the beach. We look forward to these trips more than any other special occasion. They’re my favorite.

Hilary, Absolutely loved your blog. Congrats for stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing the positive in something that you haven’t wanted to do. That’s awesome! I am not a big camper now, but some of my favorite memories growing up were tent camping with my family up in the Uintas.
