My kids are complaining about the writing prompts I gave them (based off Common Core). My kids tend to complain so much about the prompts they can’t actually write a cohesive essay on AIM’s, so I’ve come up with some prompts. AND, in return I told them I would write mine in blog form for the entire world to see with their writing prompt of their choice. Today’s prompt comes from Conner:
Write a 5-Paragraph expository essay on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich — so here goes.
At first glance a PB&J sure seems like the easiest thing to make, but I know a lot of effort goes into a sandwich. Walk down the peanut butter isle and you’ll see lots of choices. Each of these choices will predict your finished product and if your taste buds like it. Let’s delve a little further into our favorite sandwich.
First off, there’s the bread. I’m a bread maker, so I really take a lot of thought into bread. Recently I ate this sandwich on store-bought bread and MAN oh MAN is a PB&J on homemade bread SO much better. I like the firmness of the bread and how it soaks up the flavors without becoming soggy and sad. My choice of bread is homemade. If you have it.
Second, I add the peanut butter. Now, I tend to be a sale girl. Frugal as the day is long. I often use Skippy or the store brand, recently I bought Peter Pan and I wonder if it will taste any different. My kids hate chunky peanut butter, so I usually use smooth. I prefer a moderately chunky peanut butter, so maybe in a perfect world I’d do half creamy and half chunky. I like to spread it thick, even though that’s a lot of weight watchers points, so I tend to have to measure it out using my scale. Peanut butter is a lot of points. BUT, I find it hearty and welcome addition to my dietary intake.
Third is the jelly. Shh, don’t tell anyone but I REALLY like honey. I’m actually not sure which one is better for a person. Sure, jam has fruit, but it also has a lot of sugar. I’ve read a few articles about honey too, though, and I think it can be healthy also… in small doses. I actually like good old Smuckers jam if I’m forced to use jam. I think it takes me back to my childhood. I hate grape jelly. I think it has absolutely no redeeming qualities as it’s high fructose juice mixed with sugar. Yay. I also am not a fan of concord grapes. So, I guess I’ll just stick to the strawberry smuckers (unless there’s freezer jam available… then it’s an extra special day). A pretty thin layer. I’m a bigger fan of the P then the J.
I love to take peanut butter sandwiches to eat on my way to work. I find that it fills me up for a few hours so I’m ready to go for much of the morning. Sometimes I even pack another one to eat on my way home. I remember in my dietary class in college they told us that peanut butter and bread together fulfill all your amino acid needs. It sure does seem like the perfect combination.
So, I’m allowing the kids to comment with my grade. Feel free to do the same. 🙂
