TMI Tuesday: Organic?

I’m starting to notice a lot more organic stuff in stores that I normally shop at, at prices that are pretty similar to what I pay for regular stuff.

So, do I pay the ten cents more?

Ok, so this isn’t really a TMI post, but it seems like studies show that many fruits and veggies have no real benefit to being organic.  I have heard a lot of people saying that they buy organic on stuff that they’re going to eat the outside of, like apples, pears, etc.  I feel like this is a pretty normal way to go. 

I don’t have strong organic feelings, but I do feel like from our own yard and with the abilities that we’re blessed with, going organic isn’t all that hard (btw, I like a lot of people who say their graden is totally organic but fill it with miracle gro soil, and use fertilizer that isn’t just organic, in order to be organic the entirety of your garden needs to be plant-based… I do fertilize, but the soil with bone and blood meal, and I do have a small box of organic vegetable fertilizer that I sprinkle a tiny bit on every couple of months during the growign season).  Do you guys have strong organic, don’t buy organic feelings?

I should say that our lawn is an entirely different story.  That thing has enough fertilizer and chemicals to kill a… well, to kill something.  Hopefully ants and bugs, and weeds. :)

Now, is dead squirel organic, because I am TIRED of him eating the carrot tops off…

    As far as I know, dead squirrel is not organic, as they eat from all gardens and not just carefully tended organically grown ones. They are, however, edible. I’m sure someone you know has a stew recipe that you could use for him.

    I generally feel like I’d buy organic if the price isn’t more than the regular price. Occasionally the produce is on sale and I’ll buy it. For most things I like to see if it would make any difference for my children’s health (or my own) to go organic. Bananas, no, plums yes, etc. Our pediatrician said Organic milk and non-hormone treated milk isn’t any healthier than regular. The hormones fed to the cows are processed and metabolized too quickly to pass through the cows milk or even the meat.

    So my budget concerns far outweigh my Organic concerns, most of the time.

    Home gardens are great though, and the more organic the better. I don’t need a pretty tomato to teach my kids about hard work and reaping the rewards. They think the funny looking ones are better anyway :-) And size doesn’t matter.

    I will try to restrain the oodles of thoughts that come to mind…but I am failing miserably.

    Summary: If cost weren’t an issue, I would buy everything organic or equivalent(pesticide free,hormone-free,anti-biotic free) etc.
    My budget doesn’t allow buying the quality I would like to – quality whether it be organic or not. Anyone else think it is funny that real food is ‘premium’ while chemically enhanced processed into oblivion junk is normal?

    If you want to know why, here are the main reasons I prefer organic:

    -Concerns over synthetic pesticides – on the produce, on the wheat, on the feed going into the animals, in the soil, into the groundwater, into the rivers, lakes, streams, and so on and so forth. Roundup is about 70 percent Agent Orange (both from our friends at Monsanto). And it is not just the residue, I read that if it is sprayed on the plant while it is still growing then it becomes incorporated into the plant – so you can’t just wash it off and it doesn’t matter if you eat the skin or not. Children are more sensitive to the pesticides as they eat a higher proportion of food to body weight and they don’t handle them as well as adults until like 7 or something. It is not something that affects us immediately but a lifetime of pesticide ingestion leads to other problems. But I definitely agree that it is hard to cough up the money when you won’t the see the benefits for a long time.

    -Concerns over Genetically Modified Organisms. No long term studies done, will the body still recognize it as food causing more auto-immune problems, etc. etc. Also terminator seeds – Seeds that cannot reproduce – are sterile after growing once. When the pollen gets blown around it can pass this inability to reproduce to other crops and plants.

    Of course any broad comparison between organic and conventional is nearly impossible because there is such a wide variation within those groups. The biggest factor for me is cost. If the price is close and I don’t have other objections I will always go with organic. Whether organic or not, processed food, MSG, hydrogenated oils, are still to be avoided, but I admit I still feel better about pretty much anything organic. I scrutinize organic labels the same as conventional. Industrial organic has the same problems as industrial conventional. Another complication is the ‘local’ issue. Produce picked green and then ripening on or frozen for the sometimes LONG journey to my supermarket will probably not retain as many nutrients something grown local. But a local pesticide is just as much trouble and a distant one. I am working on a garden too so hopefully I can eat very local organic later this year…

    Moving onto a whole other tangent – organic in other things besides just food – like cosmetics, lotions, laundry detergent, etc. We put a whole lot of chemicals into our bodies by what we put on our skin(think nicotine patches-right into the bloodstream) not just what we eat. I am just beginning to examine this topic, but it looks the same as mentioned above: organic doesn’t necessarily mean better or healthy.
