Check out below for a GREAT option, if you ever forget to return your Redbox movie!
Oh Downton Abby. How I thought I’d hate you at first. I am not a Pride and Predjudice girl. We read it my junior year of high school and I hated it. My friends all swooned and I threw up in my mouth.
But there comes Lady Mary and all the pomp and circumstance of England at the turn of the century and I love every minute.
And I don’t pay a penny for it.
Here’s my 9 favorite ways to to stream movies and TV shows from home:
Now in order to use Hulu without getting Hulu plus (which isn’t crazy expensive, but we have made do without it) we have an old laptop that is plugged into our TV via an HDMI cord. You need to watch the shows pretty soon after they come out, but they’re still available. I fear for the day when my favorites won’t be on there, but for now I’m set. Besides Hulu I also use cbs.com to view a personal favorite The Good Wife. Love that show. SO, if there’s a network show you want to watch and it’s not on Hulu, check out their own site (if I’m quick enough to watch Downton Abby as soon as it airs I watch it on PBS.org). Those companies still want to make the advertising dollar, but to you – it’s free!.
VidAngel is my new favorite to stream new release movies. It’s only a buck for all SD movies. What a great deal, right? You have to “buy” the movie but then you can sell it right back and get a credit of the movie price minus a dollar. So, initially you’ll have a charge for 20 bucks (or whatever the original price of the movie is) and then every time after that you only pay a dollar, or sometimes it’s free if your credit is more than the movie price.
I was confused by their terms to “sell it back” – but it’s super easy. I just click on the button right after the movie. They also email you to remind you. The idea with this one is that they will edit it for you if you’d like. You pick what you don’t want to see/hear, and it edits it for you. BUT in order to do that, they have to “sell” you the movie. That’s how it gets around all the other services that rented edited movies.
If you’re still confused this post how does VidAngel work breaks it all down!
We edited Top Gun and I was pretty surprised how many swear words it had. It’s now cheaper than Redbox, no driving to the store that has the movie in stock and streamed RIGHT to you. LOVE IT!
We use Roku on the TV in our bedoom. It’s pretty low-fi and nothing fancy. Roku has “channels” that allows you to stream Netflix, Amazon and a few other ones. Think of it as a way to GET some of the other ways mentioned. You can get Hulu plus through it, but not regular hulu.
I was really worried to leave cable because I hadn’t used an antenna since I was little! Turns out with the new digital broadcasts, it’s easier than it used to be. It’s a totally viable option. 🙂 Who knew?
The main thing that we use our Chromecast for is streaming YouTube to our TV. I have yet to use it well with other services but we use YouTube a lot at our house and this makes it REALLY easy. You can set-up playlists from your favorite channels and just set it and forget it like a movie. SO easy! The set-up wasn’t hard, although you should be aware that you do need to plug it into a power source. We were able to hook it into one of the USB slots on our TV but if you don’t have a free one of those, that might be problematic as it does take power.
Use your Computer
If you have a windows machine, you can use it’s media recorder to save your favorite TV shows and then stream them to your TV. I talked about it more here in an older post about making your own DVR.
Duh, everyone is doing it. But it’s constantly changing and I LOVE Netflix. It makes me more thoughtful about what I watch.
Is there anything Amazon Prime can’t help you do? Ok, there’s an awful lot, but if I can get Polenta to my door that same day AND stream Downton Abby I feel like it’s kind of my right hand man. My parents just got their personal assistant. I’m fairly sure she’ll be washing dishes in a few years. Oh Amazon. I’m addicted. #shame BUT I do know a lot of people kind of forget the ability to stream from them, but the content is often different than Netflix, be sure to check it out. It’s streamed on Chromecast, Roku and often even from your tv — just as easily as Netflix! As always you can try it for 30 days free —Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial
My husband mentioned this one. I had a blank stare when he was telling me how it works — so I just let him write up his own thoughts:
VUDU, Ultraviolet are service providers that unlock digital content when you purchase a Blue Ray DVD. If the package includes digital content, there will be a code inside with the disc. Once you unlock the code, the digital content (usually, the movie and/or bonus material) will be available on your VUDU, Ultraviolet, Flixter, or Google Movies Account to view any where you have an internet connection. Disney movies have similar capabilities through Disney Movie Rewards and DisneyMoviesAnywhere.com. — from The Pulling Curls Hubby
I do know that we’ve used Disney Movies Anywhere and it’s SO handy! Now I can watch it on Amazon, Google Play or Vudu all once I register it. #handy!
I know a lot of people use apple TV, but we’re not that fancy. These are some doable ways to still enjoy some TV time while saving a buck or two. I know I don’t miss paying our cable bill ONE BIT.
Do you use a service I didn’t mention! Comment below to clue me in!
