Celebrating a holiday together as a family (especially one as meaningful as Easter) can be so fun.  But, finding places for all the crap things you buy/bring home is less fun.

Lately I’ve really tried to focus on things I don’t have to find room for.

My kids don’t play with toys the way I envision it.  Sometimes I buy things just to have things — which, essentially is just a huge waste of money (and time).

Before we get started, have you thought of giving YOURSELF the gift of easier-to-run household? It’s just waiting for you.

Ok, onto the gifts!

Clutter-free kids gifts:

Buy a Class

I have a friend who runs amazing after school classes.  They are so much, and it would be easy to give a summer or after school class as an awesome gift.  Maybe ask around for summer classes in your area.  It’s kind of a gift that keeps giving in that you get a few hours of freedom in the summer.

Stickers.

Ok, you might have to find a place for them — but they are kind of amazing.  We L-uuuuv Piptsticks.  What a fun thing to get in the mail every month!  Their stickers are all different and very fun (and not commercial).  Did I mention Princess P goes crazy for them (because she does).  We’ve made a spot for sticker sheets in her homework focus bin.

KiwiCo

Yes, you might have to find a SPOT for it, but they stay nicely self-contained in the boxes they come in.  I got a full year for both princess P and Mr Middle and they both REALLY like them.  KiwiCo Labs extends the project into even more science, learning, inventing learning which I absolutely love! Plan an experience together.  

Some of my favorites are

• Dinner and a movie
• We have a really cool ceramics painting class that P loves to go to.
• Skating/bowling/laser tag
• Hiking
• Bike ride to a favorite park — even pack a lunch!

A treasure hunt.  

I have heard of a lot of families who do a basket at the end of a super long yarn trail.  I think that’s SUPER fun.  That way you don’t need all the candy in the eggs, but still have the fun of a hunt!  PLUS, just put one of these things at the end.

Get Tickets

There are SO many cool performances anymore.  There’s something like Disney on Ice or tickets, the circus or to a local play.  I am sure you could find something cool in your area that your family could enjoy!  So often I just GET tickets to something like this, but using it as a gift ups the excitement and gives them/you something to really look forward to!

Plan a Trip!

It’s a budget-busting gift, but planning a trip could be fun. I have some fun ways to announce a Disney trip — but you can apply them to lots of different places!

Passes

Maybe consider membership to a local museum, etc.  We have passes to a local observatory.  It has been REALLY fun and has allowed us to visit other museums for free when we go on vacation!  You can often find a groupon for them!  Be sure to check out my post about museum memberships!

Anyway, giving gifts doesn’t have to be a time of stress to find where to put all the junk.  It can be a really fun experience for both you and your kids and build great bonds.

Now, this one may be a bit “out there” but I am a big believer in giving experiences vs things.

I just booked a cruise with Get Away Today and, like a fool, I checked out about 3 or 4 other cruise options as I looked.  They were SO nice with Get Away Today and knew so many in’s and out’s about the ship.  Plus, they had the best room selection!

A cruise is true luxury and she might be intimidated to book it on her own.

Inexpensive gifts for the woman who has everything

We all know it doesn’t have to cost much in order to mean a lot.

Some thoughtful gifts to consider:

• A cute photo done in a new, fun way from Photo Barn — I got my dad a Hexie for Father’s Day, and it doesn’t take up a lot of space, but it was from a special event he enjoyed.
• I love the memories she can put down with My Life in a Book
• A Chatbook from either her Instagram account, or yours.

First off, I think you need to assess why she wants nothing.

• Is her house too cluttered to bring more in — perhaps the gift of time to help her sort through would be a great option. This goes a long way for a more practical woman.
• Is she so happy for the blessings in her life she just can’t think of anything that would make it better?  If so, use photos to help her remember those blessings.  Bonus point for a more personal gift like this.
• She buys what she wants when she wants it — then maybe give her an experience that she’d love!  You could even give her a gift card towards something she loves to do. I love my friend Katelyn’s ideas in her adventure gifts post.

Experience Gifts for the Woman Who Has Everything

• Concert Tickets
• A Disney Trip or other travel
• Lunch at a favorite restaurant
• “coupons” to help her around the house can be great, practical gifts — and make sure she cashes them in!

What to buy boys for Christmas

I think you (and any teen boys) will love these Christmas or birthday gifts for 18 year old boys. I know shopping for older boys is harder than young boys.  Remember when all they wanted to open on Christmas morning were legos and some video games? I wanted to have one list of the best gifts for the older teen boys in your life.

Gifts for 18-Year-Old Boys

This post was actually written by my 18-year-old, so the ideas in here are legit 18-year-old stuff.  Because, I’d like to get them knitting and crossword puzzle books.

SkateBoards for 18-year-old boys

Skateboards are actually the preferred way to get around campus since colleges are so busy, it’s easier to navigate than a bike (btw if a bike a better option at their school, but they don’t know how I have a post all about how to ride a bike for adults).

Longboards– 3 different options for 3 different options for 3 different budgets are a great idea for teenage guys.

1)Quest Super Cruiser – $50-100: Works as a budget longboard for getting around.

2) Atom Drop-Through Longboard – $100-150:  A step up from the Quest. Should deliver a smoother ride and more stability, although not the best in these areas.

3) Sector 9 Meridian Longboard – $150+: The longboard my 18-year-old has. Delivers the smoothest ride and strongest stability of any longboard I’ve ever ridden. Grip tape should last a long time with standard longboard care. It’s a great choice.

**BTW, he had a cheaper one, and it just couldn’t withstand all the time he spent on it on college, so he upgraded.

Computers for 18-Year-Old Boys

If you are going to get them a computer at this age, it’s a great gift idea and you want to get one that will work well in the college environment. Also, don’t worry, we have other options less-tech below the computers if that isn’t your ideal gift!

Computers– Laptops and a variety of accessories that should work with them for any university student.

1. Acer Aspire E15 – $300 dollar range (extra accessories strongly encouraged): The laptop my son used in college. i3 7th gen processor, 4 GB of ram and 1 TB of spinning drive storage included in the stock laptop. However, extra RAM and an SSD (solid state drive) are strongly encouraged to speed up the loading times and processing power of the laptop, good options are linked below:
   • ADATA SU800 128 GB SSD – $20 dollar range: Strongly encouraged purchase in addition to the Aspire E15. Speeds up the slow data retrieval speeds of the hard drive that comes stock in the laptop.
   • Crucial 4GB DDR4 RAM – $20 dollar range: Increases the amount of RAM in the Aspire, allowing for extra Chrome tabs to be opened, and even some lower-power games to be played.

These accessories, while not absolutely necessary, are STRONGLY encouraged for buyers of the Aspire. They are quite simple to install with the access panel on the back of the Aspire, and all you will need is a simple screwdriver.

Mom tip: That’s an awesome thing for an 18-year-old to learn how to do!

1. Dell Inspiron 13 5000 – $650 dollar range: A solid option for those with middling range budgets on laptops. Includes an 8th generation Intel i5 processor which should be more than enough for all things a student may need to do, a relatively fast 256 GB SSD, and 8 GB of memory.
2. Huawei Matebook X Pro – $1000+ ($1597): One of the best laptops on the market right now, the Huawei Matebook X Pro includes an 8th generation Intel i7 processor, a 512 GB SSD, and 16 GB of RAM. This laptop will be more than enough to handle everything thrown at its way for the next 6 years. Is light, thin, fast, and very reliable.

NOTE: Important things to keep in mind: While they look great and run at very respectable speeds, Macbooks are NOT the recommended choice for young adult college students. Due to MacOS’s inability to play well with 3rd party developers, students using any Apple computers have to jump through extra hoops (not a good idea) to get the same program as students using a Windows computer can with a few simple clicks. Also, with the same price, you can buy a much higher value laptop with Windows 10 on it.

2020 update: While my son initially loved his computer, he switched to a Microsoft Surface, because of how lightweight it is (he still needs the larger computer for some of his coding though).

BTW, if you’re not sending your kid with a TV (WAY too hard to move around) one of these portable projectors are pretty cool.  They can watch Netflix or Amazon (easy with Amazon student) or even connect with their laptop.

Tips for 18-Year Old Boys

Clearly, this one isn’t cheap — but I’ve found one of the BEST Ways to get an 18 year old boy to open up is to take them to an amusement park. Gift Ideas for 18-Year-Old Boys

(prices listed are a range, not an absolute)

Pyramid Arcade — $80 if you’re looking for a BOARD game that they will get interested in — this fun gift is the one. So much logic and strategy. Perfect for this age of boys, especially if they love board games.

Eureka Crate — Your 18 year old may have done Kiwi Crate when they were younger, but the Eureka Crate line is made for teens/adults who want to try some new things. If your kid likes buildling things, you could get them a subscription to it they may enjoy. My son made his own desk lamp and headphones, which are really cool!

Matein Laptop Backpack – $30  The backpack my son has. Very protective laptop sleeve that works with most laptops including all the laptops farther up on this list. Has 3 main pockets that can hold more than enough things for a university student. Also includes external charging port that hooks up to a portable charger (not included).

A Wireless Mouse – $20  A must-have for gaming, working on homework efficiently, browsing the internet, and more. Key features include, 2 extra thumb buttons which makes gaming easy and an adjustable DPI that allows for comfort and mouse accuracy.

Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones – $50 An amazing and practical gift for someone sharing a room. No longer do you have to hear the sounds of your sniffling roommate, and they don’t have to hear the sounds of your YouTube video. My son LOVES his!

Brita Small Water Filter Pitcher – $20  Helps in the dorms, where water is neither cold nor tastes good, and also is small enough to fit in a mini-fridge. Filter replacements can be found either online or at CVS for really cheap.

Bissell Natural Carpet Sweeper -$30  A manual vacuum really helps when you spill food or other items on the floor and need something to clean it up. Doesn’t require a plug in either.

Anker PowerCore 10000 Portable Battery – $30 Portable batteries are a lifesaver in university. Phone batteries seem to run low so quickly nowadays. This battery is a great option and can charge any phone from 0 to 100% battery life at least 2 times without recharging and should last a long time with proper use.

If you’re looking for a smaller power bank, the Clutch is pretty cool. It’s about as thick as maybe 3 credit cards — pretty cool. It comes with a USB-C as well.

Master Lock 141D Reinforced Padlock – This might not seem like much fun, but under $10 Padlocks are the perfect choice for locking up your spare items at the gym, your skateboard on a skateboard rack (if your university has one of those), and much more. However, it doesn’t need to be flashy, and this simple keyed padlock should work great without needing to remember a code if you’re one of those people who forget things easily as my son does. Since he has to keep a key to his dorm on him, he just added this to that.

What are traditional gifts for 18th

Lottery tickets – It seems like a lot of parents and friends give scratch off lotto tickets for 18 year olds as a typical “coming of age” type gift. And if they happen to get a few dollars, even better!

Tool Kit – If your son is moving out on his own (or even with friends), a tool kit is a perfect gift. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just something with a few different options for screwdrivers, wrenches, a hammer, tape measure, and level. Try to find one with it’s own box or duffel bag for easy storage.

Bluetooth Speaker – Getting a portable speaker for 18-year-old guys is a great way for them to have music with good sound, but without the taking up too much space. Dorm rooms and shared apartments usually don’t have a lot of space.

Alarm Clock – While it might not be one of the coolest gifts they’ll get, it will definitely be one of the most useful. One that has the option to set two or three alarms and has a couple USB ports is always helpful.

Electric Shaver – If your son doesn’t need to fully shave every day, this is a good gift for them to not only have a quick shave, but touch up sideburns too. So unless they are going for the rugged look, they will appreciate this gift.

Money – Let’s be honest, one of the best 18th birthday presents is cold, hard cash. Try to find a fun way to package it other than just your standard greeting card.

What does a 17 year old boy need for Christmas?

​Watch – Getting them a nice, sturdy sports watch or running watch is great because it can track their heart rate during exercise but is solid so it won’t break with the slightest bump or drop.

Pocket Knife – This is an especially good gift if you have a teen boy who likes the outdoors and camping.  Make sure they are mature enough to handle one and go over knife safety with them.

Cell Phone – This one is a tough call. Each family has different ways they handle when their kids get cell phones. This is a good gift for a high school teen who is ready for the responsibility of a phone and everything it entails.  You can see my post on how we handle cell phones in our home here.

Amazon Kindle – Is your son an avid reader? Get them a Kindle and a gift voucher so they can pick their favorite books!

Being pregnant at a holiday (be it Christmas, or your birthday) is painful.  Sure, if you’re early in pregnancy you can ask for maternity clothes or a gift card and enjoy a little shopping spree.  

The further you get into your pregnancy you’re seeing the amount of time you can wear those clothes shorten.  You’d probably much rather focus on something other than your expanding midsection.

One of the BEST things you could get a pregnant mama is the gift of a confident birth. In just a few hours they can get prepared for their delivery! Learn how to give a birth class as a gift << right there.

Yes, the gift that keeps giving.  Jewelry fits, it can make you feel great, even if you’re not feeling awesome when you look in the mirror.

It’s a good idea to steer clear of rings for swollen fingers, but jewelry can be the perfect gift for the pregnant lady.

Amazon has a lot of really pretty (and reasonably priced) mother’s jewelry. That is a great sentimental gift for a pregnant sister.

Slipper gift for pregnant ladies

Slippers are a perfect choice for an expecting mom.  Get her something comfy to slip into when she gets home from work or after a long day at home.  If it’s a cooler season, warm fuzzy slippers like these would be great.

A pedicure for pregnant friends

Oh man, the feet just HURT while you’re pregnant.  Having someone rub them and having them pampered is the ultimate luxury.  Make sure you pick a popular place — that probably means it is good about sterilizing its instruments, etc.  You definitely don’t want to get infected in pregnancy. I have a whole post on my sister site about if pedicures will induce labor.

At the very least (and if money is tight) make a coupon and follow through on a serious foot rub.  Grab some bath salts and essential oils for her to soak in.  She’ll love it.

This one that she could do at home looks kind of fun.  While we’re at it — a whole-body massage wouldn’t be bad either.  Plenty of spas have special pillows to provide a prenatal massage (just call to make sure first).

Gift a robe for pregnant women

A great robe can feel AWESOME to expectant moms, similar to a pair of slippers.  And, because they come so big they work over the baby bump and you can buy her one that she can also use later.  Be sure it’s got great fabric — this plush one from Amazon looks SO soothing!  If it’s warmer, maybe consider something more lightweight like this.

A Prenatal Class for pregnant couples

It is likely that she is very nervous about the delivery day.  A prenatal class is a perfect present to help give her information for D-day, especially for a first-time mom.

Maternity Clothes as Pregnancy Gifts

Yes, a new outfit can do wonders for expecting mothers.  As long as you have a month left — maybe consider a new outfit, it can be a wonderful gift.  I wouldn’t go expensive, as that item might not get worn long.  I have had good luck shopping maternity on Ross and at Motherhood.  Amazon has great clothes at good prices.  No reason to completely steer clear of clothes, but I wouldn’t make them the staple of your presents.

Also, be VERY thoughtful on sizing.  Things have changed.  That’s all I’ll say.  It’s better to steer clear of this vs buying something too small.

A night out for pregnant friends

I’m all about experiences vs things and a date out would be a perfect pregnancy gift.  Go to a play (if sitting isn’t uncomfortable), a movie, or a great dinner.  Think of something SHE would really like and then blow it out of the water.  That is a GREAT gift!

Birthday gifts for pregnant women:

A Water Bottle is a great gift for pregnant ladies

I’m the queen of saying how important hydration is.  But, having a great water bottle makes getting water inside you even easier.  That baby is a parasite that sucks the fluid out of you.  Even though it seems dumb – or something you wouldn’t normally get her- this is a good gift that will help her feel a lot better in the long run, even after the baby arrives!

Gift Baskets for a New Mom-to-Be

I love a good gift basket.  This is a great opportunity to include some of your favorite little things that don’t feel like a gift on their own.  You could put all items in a nice diaper bag that they can use after the baby arrives. What to Include in a Gift Basket for Good Friends

Some things I would include in a gift basket are:

Cream for stretch marks, while they don’t all help with preventing or making them go away they can be soothing.  Look for something with Vitamin E.

Pregnancy pops to help with morning sickness (more about if they actually help here).

A pregnancy journal is great for a pregnant mom who wants to remember all the little day-to-day thoughts and feelings. Or, if they’re the planner type this might be cool!

Body oil, body wash, body lotion, face masks, and nail polishes in a few different colors.  Self-care products are a great way

Pillows for pregnant women

I saved the best for last because a pregnancy pillow is a very thoughtful gift.  There are awesome pregnancy pillows like this one.  arge body pillows can be comfortable to help support joints.  Really even just a great bed pillow that she can use as she’d like is a good idea.  Pregnant mamas know how important sleep is and great pillows can help her get good sleep.

Birthday or Christmas Pregnancy Gifts

Either way — a gift for a pregnant woman should include 3 key points:

1. Be thoughtful of her.  She’s carrying a baby and her heart is very tender at this point.  What could she REALLY use?  What will she love?  What will help her know you care?
2. Her comfort is key.  Anything that can make her comfortable is a win!
3. An eye towards the future.  Once you’re past 20 weeks, giving a gift for the baby is similar to getting her something.  Get something amazing, something that builds the anticipation of the big day.

Venturing out in the car with a little one is always a bit scary.  Something like this might make those first journeys a bit easier.

I have been a nurse since 1997 and I have 20 years of OB nursing experience, I am also the curly head behind this website Pulling Curls. ​ In addition to helping thousands of babies come into the world, I’ve also been pregnant three times myself. I understand how hard it can be to both be pregnant, and to also please a pregnant woman’s mind.

Ok, let’s get started…..

Questions to ask yourself before purchasing a valentines gift for a pregnant woman:

#1 How far along is she?

If she’s EARLY in her pregnancy, she might enjoy a gift card to a maternity store, or a baby store so she can dream about how great this is all going to be. BUT, if she’s close to the end, she may want something that honors that soon she’ll have her body and her life back a bit more. A gift certificate to a favorite store that she can enjoy sans-fetus once baby is born is nice.

#2 What are her biggest complaints right now?

Is it swelling feet, than I have a couple of awesome ones for that.

Is it sleep? I’ve got one for that too.

Is it weird face skin, or an itchy belly. You can always research her specific problems to see if you can find a solution for her. It also will show you want her to feel as good as she possibly can.

Be SURE to read the list below because I have some good options for some of the most COMMON complaints (because, after over 22 years of doing this — I’ve heard them!).

#3 What do you normally do?

If you’ve been together for a few years, and you always get her lingerie, maybe do it again. You want to both honor the fact that things are VERY different right now, but she’s still that same special woman who makes your heart flutter when she smiles at you. So, get something loose fitting that will fit next year too.

A note of caution: When you give the gift, make SURE that you put some thought into it. But you have to treat your pregnant wife so carefully. Make sure that your wife feels like she can return it if necessary and that you will have no hard feelings about what she thinks about it. You’re just there to love her with this special gift. It’s fun to surprise your wife with something unique, but just make sure that she knows you’re OK with however she feels about it.

Oh, and sizing on stuff is ALL over the place. You can get her an outfit your wife can wear, but be sure she knows you had no idea what size to get and you hear that store’s sizing is weird, so she can feel free to return it (just make sure she CAN return it and you keep your receipts).

OH, and one more pro-tip. Many of these are very practical gifts — and maybe you’re just not the guy that gives your wife a vacuum for her birthday. But, during pregnancy things may change for her. Little things that make life easier maker her heart swoon in a good way. But, keep your receipts, because you just never know. That’s the fun thing about pregnant women.

In this article I will use wife, partner, girlfriend. Don’t worry about the word I use — just substitute for whatever you use for her. And if you’re reading this post for just a pregnant friend, that’s great too! I know you’ll find some awesome gift ideas in here!

Ok, let’s jump into those valentines gifts that I think will hit the mark!

A Pregnancy Pillow

If sleep is her issue, she’s going to love this one. And frankly, at the same time you’re also going to be getting less room in the bed. By showing her you understand how important sleep is for her and this growing baby you’re saying you love her. Here are three of my favorites:

• I think this one is my favorite because it is shaped to cradle her neck, her belly bump, and between her hips.
• Want something a bit more simple — something like this is fine too.
• These just seem giant and I just prefer a curve, but maybe you think she’ll love this one.

A Belly Support Band

Is she complaining of an aching belly or back? A pregnancy support band is a great option to help support her belly and eliminate a lot of those aches and pains. Here are three of my favorites for a valentines day gift idea:

• I like how this one supports top and bottom
• If she has hip pain, she can wear one of these a bit lower on her hips to help that too.
• If she’s just MISERABLE something like this might help — but it’s a lot. You’ll want to get something a bit “sexier” to go with it.

I know they certainly don’t seem sexy, but making her feel more comfortable is one of the BEST valentines day gifts!

BONUS TIP: If you’re worried she’ll hate that, or it will be too hot (I live in Arizona so I totally get that). I actually have seen a LOT of luck with this. You can sort of term it as a new tech gadget to see if it helps her feel any better. The studies actually show that it can (which is wild). A Prenatal Class

If you guys are past about 20 weeks, it’s time to start thinking about how that baby is going to get out.

Most people have a hard time just choosing a class, so picking one out that is taught by an expert is a way that you can’t go wrong. Plus, it shows you that you’re willing to do the class WITH her, which is the stuff that pregnant dreams are made of.

The Online Prenatal Class for Couples was created for new parents to do TOGETHER. It’s from a nurse with over 20 years of experience and many people call it fun (hard to believe, but true). It’s also one of the best-priced ones out there {see my posts on the costs of prenatal class — the average for a “no-frills” class is about $190, and the fancier, more supportive classes are normally around $300).

I know it doesn’t seem like the most romantic or best valentine gift, but in giving her that one for couples, you’re saying — hey {insert partner name} I’m here to learn and support you! And there’s no more wonderful gift than that — quality time and learning things about what’s coming. May even bring a happy tear to her eye.

Supportive Comfy Shoes

Those feet are likely going to grow, so getting her some supportive shoes that can grow with that expanding belly is a kind move. This one needs to be done thoughtfully. Maybe it’s just slippers, but if she’s just miserable, something she can wear out will make her more comfortable for sure. I had a pair of the UGLIEST shoes with my first baby that I wore daily. I loved them though, and this isn’t rare. Shoes she’ll love is a great gift for pregnant women!

Here are a few to check-out:

Clogs are a great option (because no one wants to tie shoes 9 months pregnant). Plus these are REALLY supportive, when I tried them on I was suprised!

I have these shoes and i LOVE them. They’re made by a podiatrist (but look “cool”) and the heel can either be tucked in (and you wear it like a clog) or pulled up to keep your foot in.

Or, if she REALLY wants sneakers but doesn’t want to have to bend over to get her foot in these are a good option.

And, if she plans to wear “regular” shoes all day but could use something comfy at home try this one, this one or this one — depending on her style.

This type of present can both be the worst and best because she may feel like her life has gone to pot since she can’t wear her stylish shoes anymore. OR, your wife will LOVE them and the fact they’re SO comfortable now!

A Massage

This may be in line with what you normally give her — but I can tell you from experience that there is NO massage that feels better than a pregnancy massage. This is probably one of the top valentines day gifts for pregnant women (might be worth it to see if any local places are offering specials on a spa day or a prenatal massage gift card for valentines).

First off, make sure that the spa has a cut-out that your sweetheart can lay on her belly and let her baby bump in it (laying on my stomach felt AMAZING after months of avoiding that). I’d be SURE to get at least 60-90 minutes because every ounce of her body is affected by this pregnancy. Hormones don’t JUST stay in her pelvic region, they anger the ligaments, joints and muscles around her whole body and it will feel SO great. She’ll absolutely love it!

Bonus: Get her more than one as a valentine’s gifts — sometimes that first one is awkward until you get into it.

A Foot Bath

Ok, maybe giant shoes aren’t really the right fit for her. Consider a foot spa as a gift for your pregnant wife. It’s going to feel awesome on tired feet. Remember they’re affected by those hormones, they’re carrying more weight AND they’re often swollen in those last few months.

Pro tIp: Every woman wants her feet rubbed a LOT when they’re pregnant, so this is a way she can soak them and you can avoid a few foot rubs. It’s a good idea, and a thoughtful gift for pregnant moms.

A Doula consult

Ok, you’ve taken the prenatal class, but she’s feeling like she could use a bit more help (but doesn’t want to go the whole way to get an actual doula — although that would be a great gift too). I love the doula from BLOC birth (she was on my podcast, and I love her social media). I think her prenatal birth consult would be amazing for a Valentines gift. Especially if she’s just worried about how you guys can be a team both at birth and after baby is born!

This is the perfect gift to give your wife if she is feeling anxious about birth (after a prenatal class — I’d try the prenatal class first to see if that was enough).

A Postpartum Doula

Ok, this is the gift I would have LOVED after I had a baby. A postpartum doula comes in a few nights after baby is born to help out. Often they get up and settle baby and then bring them to you when they’re ready to eat, providing you guys at least a FEW nights of great sleep. Honestly, as great as a labor doula is, a postpartum doula would be AMAZING. I mean, in the hospital you at least have nurses to support you…

The problem can be finding one. So, I’d call your partner’s doctor’s office to see if they have anyone they recommend. Often doulas will partner with doctor’s offices. If yours doesn’t have one, maybe find a doctor’s office in the nicest part of town and just call to ask if they have any postpartum doulas they recommend.

This gift won’t be cheap, but it really would be a gift for BOTH of you. These doulas are super experienced with a new baby and a new mom and can help and answer questions about your little one too while they’re there. A great resource! And not JUST to help your wife! It’s one of the BEST gifts (but may take a bit of effort).

A Microwaveable Heat Pack

These are awesome to just have around the house. I also recommend them to a pregnant person if they’re feeling crampy towards the end. I prefer these to a heating pad because she can fall asleep with it on, and it will cool down (rather than stay on). This is great for after baby too so she can heat and heal (awesome for after-baby cramps too). If she’s feeling sore this can be one of the best valentines day gifts!

I really like this one as you can use it on tired lower ligaments without getting it all over your baby bump (you don’t want to lay it directly over your stomach — I have a whole post on heating pads during pregnancy).

A pregnancy gift basket

If she just loves to be pampered maybe pick out a valentines gift basket. Look for some lotions, belly creams, lip balms (one of the MOST important things for your hospital bag), handmade soap, favorite essential oils some favorite sweets or salty foods and put it together to show you care. This can be done really cheaply too! However, I’d keep receipts on this one too. Smells she loved before she may not love now. During this special time, she’s complicated. Right?

OR, have someone else make the “basket” for you with Bump Boxes!

BTW, I just realized a hospital bag gift basket would be fun — you’ll want:

Schedule a babymoon together. It’s the perfect way to get some time together and make some special memories before baby is born.

If she’s close to delivery you could consider some awesome postpartum pj’s. She’ll love how comfy they are (and how easy they are to breastfeed in).

If you haven’t bought much for baby, you could buy her something like some baby blankets (people love these swaddle ones), onesies, or a cute outfit to show her you’re excited for what’s to come together!

Does she have a favorite author or is a book lover? Offer her one with the promise to clean up dinner for the next week so she can enjoy her book (bonus points for that one).

As you can tell, the gift doesn’t have to be expensive, the best gift of all is knowing that you care for her, you want to support her now, during delivery and after baby comes.

And no matter what you do — the gift of doing a prenatal class with her is a gift that will pay off big time for BOTH of you!

Pretend Play Gifts for 4-Year-Olds

Four years old It’s an exciting age because there are lots of fun activities and toys that will fit with your child’s attention span.

4-year-olds love to do what you’re doing (even if you don’t think it sounds like very much fun). A food/kitchen set will help them do lots of “big person” tasks like a grocery store, making dinner or setting up shop. It’s a fun way for young children play pretend.

Girls sometimes need a magical place to play, think or read. A tent with sparkles does just the trick! Throw in a cute sleeping bag and your little princess and her close friends will have hours of fun.

A doctor’s kit can be SO useful, and it can start off talks with younger children about our bodies and keeping yourself healthy too!

Motor Skills Gifts for 4-Year-Olds

Lego is always one of the most favorite things — but take it up a notch for your little girl and get one of the princess sets! Not only will her imagination run wild, she’ll love to do it with a favorite princess friend!

Pogo sticks seem fun — but can be scary if you’re not coordinated right. This one is a good option for little kids to enjoy the jumping, with less risk.

What 4-year-old doesn’t want to make their own jewelry? This fun, colorful set is on of the best toys– and bonus points because putting the beads together will help important eye-hand coordination skills they need.

Or, get a building set of another variety. I like how, with this one, you use a wrench to build!

One of my favorite ways for 4-year-old motor skills is stickers. Plus, it’s stickers. I love PipSticks — it’s good quality stickers (no commercial characters) that your child can be imaginative with!

If your little one is an artist, a great way to encourage their art is a finger painting set. Or you can get them paintbrush sets that are a little larger for their little hands to grab. This would also be a good idea if the birthday girl wanted an art-themed party.

I absolutely love KiwiCo Labs. We did it when my youngest was 4 (I wish it had been around with my other 2 though). It’s great to get, and spread out through the month to learn more about the things in the kit. They have changed to KiwiCo Labs that allows the learning to extend even more (which is amazing). I love that they have options for older children too.

Another one, fairly similar (I prefer Kiwi Crate, but it’s a close call) is Green Kids crafts.

I think Kiwi Crate is a litle more engineering-minded, and Green Kids is a bit more science-y.  Just my thoughts — if you’re trying to decide between the two.

Or, have you seen the Squishmallows? They’re a great one to cuddle up with in bed. Or put your head on when you’re looking at a good book.

Hi, I’m Hilary — I’ve been a nurse since 1997 and have worked with TONS of nurses and student nurses. Today I want to share what are some of the BEST things to give someone in nursing school.

I make no secret of the fact that I thought nursing school was one of the darkest periods of my life.  It is an insane degree that can really make ladies suffer. Buying someone you love who’s in nursing is a great a way to show you care.

Here are some ideas for the perfect gift for a nursing school student.

Before you get a gift for a nurse student:

Double-check what they can wear and use.  Some schools have strict dress codes, or supplies students have to use.  Just something to be mindful of. Even “real nurses” often have pretty specific things they can and can not wear as medical professionals. Even different colors of scrubs are sometimes banned.

Nursing Student Gift Guide:

Shoes for a student nurse

I am a HUGE fan of Dansko Clogs.  They are what I’ve worn the last few years. But, recently I felt like I needed a little more cushioning for my 12-hour shifts, so I am now wearing Sanitas.  Remember student nurses have REALLY long shifts on their feet.  Shoes are SUPER important, and because good ones are often pricey they are a GREAT gift for a health care worker.

I also used to wear Nurse Mates and loved them.  So, they may need to try a few styles before they find their favorite.

A lot of nurses also love compression socks like these (those are the ones I wore as a nurse), to help with leg pain during work.

**A note on shoe finishing:  A lot of clogs come in a “patent” finish.  I find that tears away pretty easily and doesn’t wear as well as I’d hoped.  I like the look, but I steer clear of it anymore. A gift that lasts is a thoughtful gift.

Clothes for Nursing Students

**Before you buy — make sure that you check what they are able to wear, and if they have to wear special patches (we did).  Hence, I only had 2 pairs because the patches were pretty pricey as well as the scrubs.  BUT, that being said, these are probably the most popular kind.

Supplies for Nursing Students:

The #1 tool a nurse always has around her neck is a stethoscope, so it’s an ideal gift. I have used a Littmann stethoscope my entire career. My littmann stethoscope has held up well and I think they do a good job, and are high quality. They’re used for checking heart rate, lungs and even reflexes! A stethascope is one of those essential tools for a nurse. Also a great gift for a new nurse (if they don’t already have a good one). Don’t forget a stethoscope ID tag, it’s a great way to keep the doctors from stealing it (“inadvertantly”).

Good nurses (aka, not me anymore) carry around a hemostat and scissors. They are incredibly helpful to have on your person, both would be practical gifts.  I used to carry them until a doctor stole them one day.  Yup, I’m still mad.  I like that the ones I linked to aren’t going to get sent to sterile processing with the other stainless steel — they’ll remember they are yours. A very useful gift.

Depending on their department, they may also like a nice pen light (important in Neuro).

Or, you could get a cute badge reel if you want something cute. Sometimes something fun during those long hours makes a different for your favorite nurse.

Snarky Pens can be a fun way to show your funny side without getting in trouble. A light-hearted gift. I love those! They can keep those long after they become a registered nurse.

While I don’t wear one of these, you can guess that it comes in handy (and I see most ICU and ER nurses have them on). It’s not like you can a haul a tote bag into each of your patient’s rooms.

Having a closed water bottle is key for nurses as they chart. Hospitals don’t want open water bottles at the nurses station, so make sure it seals well (in case it tips).

Christmas nurse gifts for nursing students:

Ink Cartridges: You spend SO much time printing and working on papers, it is insane.  Ink is always welcome. If, they have to print things out frequently (probably didn’t as much as “back in the day”).

Gift Cards: It can be hard to find time to work when you’re in nursing school (ours recommended you not work, although I ignored it).

A fun activity on a break:  You cling to school breaks like an oasis in nursing school.  For me, I didn’t have many finals, so I had a good 3 weeks off between semesters, which was always awesome.

Massage: Nursing is hard work — hard, physical work. A massage would be a very kind gesture. You could even package it with some essential oils or a set of bath salt to help them relax. A great gift for the special nurse in your life.

Blackout Drapes: If your student is on night shift during their clinical rotations, blackout curtains could be a very kind gift for them.

Ideas for a Nurse Graduate Gift / Graduation Gift Ideas:

A trip. A vacation is what I did. In fact, I booked a Disneyland trip with Get Away Today!

Some of the best gift ideas come from helping them remember who they are APART from nursing out of nursing school. Maybe something they used to enjoy as a hobby before school took over. Nursing school graduates often flounder to remember who the heck they are NOW? This personal touch would make a beautiful gift. not sure, maybe try an adult coloring book — this one is funny!

NCLEX study tools. Even if they’re done with nursing school, it doesn’t meant that studying is over. They now have to take their boards to license. Maybe some reference cards, or a study resource may help. Whole this isn’t the most fun nursing graduation gift, I bet it would be appreciated.

The best graduation gifts acknowledge how much they’ve done to get where they are.

Best Gift for Nursing Students

Just feel for them.  It is a rough, rough degree.  Offer to bring them dinner as they head into finals, or give them a gift card to eat on campus (or at the hospital cafeteria).

Even text messages of encouragement can be an AMAZING gift when it is seeming long and hard.

And just acknowledge it will be worth it in the end!

Either way, words of encouragement that they can do it and that it will be worth it are priceless to a future nurse.

I think men think they’re being sexist if they give their wife a vacuum, which you are — if you get an ordinary vacuum.  BUT, these items are going to make cleaning, cooking, baking all easier!  She’ll absolutely love them!

A Robot Vacuum for Your Wife

I. love. my. robot vacuum! There aren’t enough exclamation points for that sentance.

We bought one, and it committed suicide by going outside in the rain…. I then dived into all the options and I have a post on the best robot vacuums — lots of price points in that article!

These RoboVacs from Eufy have gotten GREAT Reviews on Amazon (we currently own those).

Of course, there’s the gold standard — the Roomba.  The thing I love about those is you can creat boundaries electronically so that your vacuum doesn’t take down your Christmas tree.

Either way a robot vacuum is a great gift — especially if you empty the cannisters and clean the filters like my husband does.

A great blender gift for your wife

If your wife likes making icey drinks or smoothies, a great blender is the PERFECT gift!

So, you might be familiar with a hand held mixer that your mom might have used.  Mixers have come a long way.  A lot of people love their kitchenaid — but I compared the Bosch Universal vs Kitchenaid — and Kitchen Aid is now sitting in my basement.  It was NOT the winner

Tons of people bought an Instant Pot when it was all the rage (still love mine) but did you know you can get a lid that turns it into an AIR FRYER?

Some women love to shop — and if that’s the case, a gift card to her favorite store is a GREAT place to start.

BUT, some women have a hard time finding the kinds of clothes they like.

That’s why a gift card to somewhere like Stitch Fix or Dia is a good idea.

The idea behind these services is that your wife fills out a questionnaire about all her likes and dislikes, along with her measurements.  They send her a box with things they think she’ll like.  She can keep the items, or send them back.  Most of the services have a styling fee that you can apply to any of the items in your box.  THe two I like most are Stitch Fix and Dia & Co.  Dia — FYI is just for women size 14-32 — Stitch Fix is for women sizes 0 to 24W

Does she wish things were hotter or colder between the sheets?  Literally?

My husband and I sleep at very different temperatures and we are sleeping SO much better with our Bed Jet.  I have a BedJet review — but it can make your bed a whole new place. Which makes it one of the most thoughtful gifts. After a long day, she will get to relax in bed at the perfect temperature for her.

I have mostly used mine to keep things cool this summer in AZ (which it does AWESOME at), but I can’t wait to let it get my sheets toasty warm in the winter!  If your wife is cold at night, THAT is the right gift for her!

I recently got one of these and I love using it when I’m watching the news or going through email.  It makes workout time easy to fit in for a busy mom.  You can see my whole Deskbike review here.

Another good option is a fitbit charge or Apple Watch series 6. The both come in a lot of different colors and would be a really useful gift.

If she’s trying to make sure she’s drinking enough water every day, maybe grab her a water bottle or stainless steel tumbler.

First, I’d beg her for some ideas.  Then I’d go back into the areas of this post.  Decide if one of the things above would work.  Stitch Fix is a great idea since it’s a gift that she can really love and not put a lot of effort into it.

Another option is photos.  I love the unique gifts at PhotoBarn and because a lot are self-standing so you don’t have to take a lot of effort to put it on your wall.
